FOR THE LOVE OF LITERATURE

Average Rating4.39
(based on 969 reviews)

I love creating resources and spend far too much time doing it. Currently teaching mostly A-level English Literature, but there are a range of free and paid resources for all ages. I believe in challenging students with a range of ambitious material, but also believe that this needs to be underpinned by explicit direction on HOW students can develop their ideas in written form. Write better... think better... think better...write better... and so on.

'Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde' vocabulary glossary

(3)
I created a vocabulary glossary for the entire novel, containing words that may be unfamiliar to students. They have to find the definitions themselves - a good weekly homework task I think and could be used for spelling tests too... which students enjoy

Reading skills 9th grade to 12th grade

A good way of practicing cloze reading skills. A selection of openings to novels can be used to develop cloze reading skills; discussion and when beginning a novel with a particular effect.

Close analysis and interpretation skills

This resource was developed when I was teaching 'The Handmaid's Tale' in Year 12 on the OCR spec for comparative c/work but could be used/adapated for any study of a prose text. The idea is to get the students 'asking the right questions' of texts, with a solid focus on assessment objectives (in this case A03/4). Hopefully the powerpoint explains it but essentially, each student (or in pairs) is a that allow the best possible answer. . . The 'steps' outlined in the powerpoint give them guidance.

Introduction to Jane Austen/ 'Persuasion'

(1)
Two introductory resources I used for a y12 group about to start studying Austen's 'Persuasion' for c/work/ Pre-reading activity gets them thinking about openings to a selection of Austen novels (so could be used for any Austen novel). We focused on style and applied critical ideas about entry strategies. Then there is a female character adjective match focusing on chapters 1-3. They have to find supporting quote/evidence to justify their ideas.

'An Inspector Calls': act by act objectives

(5)
I created a learning objectives sheet/ key vocab and stretch/challenge targets for each act of 'An Inspector Calls'. Good sheets to give students at the beginning of each act- you can return to these as much as you like throughout study...simple...but work well!

The World's Wife comparison chart

(1)
Comparison chart to allow students to compare any two poems from 'The World's Wife'. Includes aspects to focus on... works really well. Could be easily adapted to compare with other prose/poetry texts too.
Macbeth decision tree and conversation analysis

Macbeth decision tree and conversation analysis

(1)
Two resources - not really connected! First one is a checklist of conversation techniques (eg turn taking/ adjacency pairs), which you can use to analyze the Lady M and Macbeth scenes pre the murder of Duncan. Gets them thinking about the language of power, as well as the nature of spoken language. Resource two is a decision tree for students to fill in, exploring all the possibilities and consequences facing Macbeth at the end of Act 1.

Paradise Lost and Dr Faustus

(2)
A scheme of work, comparing Milton's 'Paradise Lost' and Marlowe's 'Dr Faustus'. Challenging but very rewarding - lots of links for classicists too.

A selection of war poetry from Carol Ann Duffy to Wilfred Owen (and accompanying cover sheet). You can shuffle order around, but I have printed into an A5 booklet for students. I used this with Y9 but could be used for GCSE depending on board.

Writing about character

(8)

A lesson designed to help students write about character succesfully- either for an unseen text or for any text studied in class. . The powerpoint should be self explanatory but the starter activity is matching adjectives to definitions then there is a longer extract there to explore for main, The powerpoint should make what to do clear- for you and them.(ESPECIALLY GOOD FOR BOYS WHO CAN SOMETIMES STRUGGLE WITH EMPATHY BASED TASKS) :)

Pride and Prejudice 'Lonely Hearts' activity

(0)
An oldie but goodie - powerpoint talks students through what lonely hearts are, with examples, then provides instructions on how to write their own. Provides some amusing results and I really push mine to write in the style of character and try to apply some of Austen's irony.

A selection of a few bits:- Lesson plan and resource comparing Crooks and Curley's wife as one of the weak ones- Scaffolded chart to compare George and Lennie- Essay title and guidance for George and Lennie in chapters 1 and 2- Character chart on all characters in novel; completed by me; exploring their significance to plot and to themes. You could give this to students or delete and get them to fill in it- you'll have the answers ready-done!
Introducing Charles Dickens

Introducing Charles Dickens

(3)
Inspired by a Teachit activity on the opening to ‘A Christmas Carol’, this activity is intended for y7/8 when introducing them to Dickens. There are four different extracts from Dickens’ novels and two group tasks associated with each - analysing how he ‘hooks’ the reader in, then preparing a dramatic reading for the rest of the class, intended to inspire them to read more. Lots of fun… and gives them ownership over their text.

'To Kill A Mockingbird' - revision powerpoint

(7)
A detailed revision powerpoint, outlining the AQA modern texts exam (although this could be removed/ changed to fit your board) and lots of slides on context, complete with questions encouraging students to make links to the novel.\n\nFinal slide suggests they get into groups and come up with essay plans to past exam questions.
